January 2nd, 2010

If you haven’t heard (and just in case in you care), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has opted to nominate 10 candidates for Best Picture this year. When I found out about the decision early this summer, I wondered how on earth they were going to find five non-stinkers on which to bestow the honors, let alone twice that amount. Luckily, Hollywood rallied in the second half of the year, offering up some great films across a few genres. Just enough, in fact, for this list of Top 10 movies of 2009.

Cars Movie Characters

December 29th, 2009

Cars movie characters have been delighting both children and adults since their 2006 appearance in theaters. The seventh collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Disney, the film tells the story of an anthropomorphic racecar named Lightning McQueen and his misadventures while preparing for an upcoming race. Movie Characters

December 29th, 2009

Movie characters give a film its human component and breathe life into its celluloid body.  Otherwise, a film would be nothing more than a series of well-lit and soulless shots.  While it could be argued that a film like Andy Warhol’s experimental Empire (which features eight hours of footage of the Empire State Building at dusk) contains no such human elements, I would ague that the iconic building itself becomes a movie character, substituting its various doors and windows for the facial features of a living being.  In film, even an object can take on human characteristics (for example, 1956’s The Red Balloon).
